On Trend Bathroom Wall Decor Ideas

Cold, clinical, clean; bathroom walls were once a feature forgotten in favour of practicality.

Yet recent years have seen a profusion of wall and paint trends making their way into the bathroom space - from warm , Mediterranean wall colours to whimsical wallpaper. Whether it’s on-trend wall panelling or a modern take on traditional tiling, we take a look at the options to help you decide how to style your bathroom walls.

Bathroom Wall Tiles

A mainstay of any bathroom wall design, bathroom tiles need not necessarily look as practical as they are. The variety in bathroom wall tile options has evolved considerably over the past decade and there is an abundance of colours, shapes and textures to choose from when decorating your walls.

Most recently we have been seeing a movement towards zellige tiles with natural variations that give an artisan look to your bathroom. Large, slab-style marble tiles in carrara and black are also growing in popularity, giving bathroom walls an opulent, luxurious finish.

Looking to nature for inspiration, green bathroom tiles have also seen a resurgence- ranging in colour from soft, delicate sage to dark green tiles reminiscent of Art Deco design. More traditional designs have also seen a makeover, with the once banal square tile appearing in more vibrant primary and fluoro colours. Terrazzo and terracotta continue to bring novelty and warmth to bathroom walls, with no sign of these popular wall trends abating.

Bathroom Paint

Paint offers a quick, effective and low-cost decorative update to any bathroom wall and when it comes to colour, the choices are endless. Bring warmth to bathroom walls by opting for shades with yellow undertones. These can range from the palest neutral paint colours like taupe, off white colours and calamine to bolder shades with warm undertones like emerald.

When considering the myriad of bathroom paint colours available, it’s equally important to take into account the practicalities of painting your bathroom walls. Humidity, mould and the everyday wear and tear that comes with a high-traffic room are all factors that will affect your bathroom décor choices. We recommend opting for an anti-mould paint in a satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish to prevent bubbling, peeling or mildew on bathroom walls further down the line.

Bathroom Wallpaper

Another relatively quick bathroom update, bathroom wallpaper is an easy way to add colour, pattern and life to previously unloved bathroom walls. From botanical Chinoiserie and verdant tropical wallpaper styles to large scale panoramic murals, bathroom wallpaper trends for 2022 are anything but ordinary. Whimsical wallpaper designs that have been so popular in previous years are now accompanied by textural elements, such as trompe l'oeil, that give even further depth and interest to bathroom walls.

Together with new trends in wallpaper design we are now seeing new and more effective ways of application, including peel and stick wallpaper, making decorating your bathroom walls easier than ever.

Fluted Bathroom Walls

From ribbed glassware to reeded glass shower panels, texture has been a key feature of interior design since 2019. One of the most exciting trends to emerge in bathroom design, fluted and textured walls have (quite literally) added another dimension to our penchant for accent walls. Fluted wall panels that can be bought in large sheets are the easiest way to incorporate the trend in your bathroom wall decor, but 3D tiles, such as concertina effect ceramic tiles are yet another way to elevate the look.

Bathroom Wall Panelling

It would be near criminal to write a blog on bathroom wall decor ideas and not mention that breakout trend of the year. Wood panelling and tongue and groove walls have been revived and reimagined, away from the shabby chic distressed wood walls of the late 90s and towards something entirely more polished.

From simple vertical shiplap cladding to the shaker-style board and batten wall, wooden panelling in your bathroom is a charming way to add depth and warmth. Following closely in the wake of the Japandi trend, cedar wall panels are another, more contemporary way of introducing bathroom wall panelling to more minimalist bathrooms

Statement Bathroom Ceilings

If the bathroom is the forgotten room in the house, then ceilings are almost certainly the forgotten feature. Make the most of a blank bathroom wall by decorating it floor to ceiling. Ceiling decoration works particularly well in narrow bathrooms to draw the eye upward and create a gravity-defying statement.

The addition of a ceiling rose to a dark bathroom ceiling, particularly in traditional bathrooms, adds instant grandeur. Take a note from the trend for wood panelling and carry the look through to your bathroom ceiling to create a warm and inviting Japanese bathhouse look.

Bathroom Wall Art

Last but certainly not least, bathroom wall art is a cheap and cheerful way to update your space. Coordinate your choice of bathroom art with your interior style to really elevate bathroom walls. Simple, monotone line drawings work beautifully as large singular pieces, or layer walls with clashing frames for a novel bathroom gallery wall. Capture the popular 2022 Soho House trend by placing a single, large gilded frame art piece above a freestanding bath to make your bathroom walls a thing of beauty.
